This course will equip teacher candidates with the foundational knowledge of literacy development beginning with oral language and the typical progression along the literacy continuum. Candidates will explore evidenced-based practices grounded in cognitive, linguistic, socio-cultural, and motivational influences on literacy development. Along with analysis of various assessment tools, teacher candidates will be involved with the study of the language arts, theoretical models for literacy development and learning, as well as the foundations of reading and writing behaviors. Candidates will investigate the vital importance of school and family relationships in literacy development and explore ways of effectively communicating and supporting families. The successful completion of course is a prerequisite for Clinical I: Literacy (EDU 101).
