The Communications and Media Studies major aims to prepare students to work in a variety of professions including public relations, advertising, media relations, advancement, non-profit advocacy, project management, social and digital media, and many other industries. Core courses will emphasize multimodal communication and effective strategies for sharing information: information gathering, interpreting and evaluating, and presenting.
Program Learning Outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate familiarity with key concepts, perspectives, and trends in communications and media.
- Students will critically evaluate media messages through multiple perspectives, including their cultural, social, and historical contexts.
- Students will apply theoretical and practical skills—grounded in professional and ethical standards—in both coursework and real-world experiences such as internships.
- Students will effectively communicate across multimodal platforms with clarity, organization, and professionalism.
The major has a required core course component and several choices for elective courses to round out the program of study depending on student interest and faculty availability. To earn a degree in Communications and Media Studies, a student must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all required coursework.
