The Communications and Media Studies major aims to prepare students to work in a variety of professions including public relations, advertising, media relations, advancement, non-profit advocacy, project management, social and digital media, and many other industries. Core courses
will emphasize multimodal communication and effective strategies for sharing information: information gathering, interpreting and evaluating, and presenting.
Program Learning Outcomes:
- After completing the major, students will demonstrate mastery of the concepts, perspectives, and trends in media and communications.
- After completing the major, students will be able to apply the concepts, principles, and methods they have learned in their coursework and internship experience.
- After completing the major, students will be able to critically evaluate current materials, messages, and cultural productions from a variety of interpretive perspectives.
- After completing the major, students will be able to employ professional standards, ethical practices, and legal standards in the fields of media and communications.
- After completing the major, students will exhibit proficiency in communicating effectively and avoiding pitfalls.
The major has a required core course component and several choices for elective courses to round out the program of study depending on student interest and faculty availability. To earn a degree in Communications and Media Studies, a student must have a minimum GPA of
2.0 in all required coursework.
