This 50-hour clinical is the first of two clinical experiences required for early childhood, elementary, and special education majors. The clinical experience provides the teacher candidate with an opportunity to observe the assigned mentor teacher teach literacy lessons, gain experience and practice using evidence-based literacy methods, and apply theory and management skills while working with students. Candidates will complete a variety of engagements with the whole class and small groups to familiarize them with grade level literacy standards and expectations for the grade level to which they are assigned. The teacher candidate will work with an individual student to complete a case study in which they administer at least three pre- and post-diagnostic assessments, analyze data, set learning goals, write and teach at least 5 responsive lessons, and assist in building the student’s self-esteem and confidence as a literacy learner. Activities in this clinical are designed to deepen and extend the foundational knowledge of literacy development introduced in the prerequisite course, Literacy Foundations (EDU 301). 3 credit hours
